I'm a first-year student at UT, and I came across your posting when I was searching for "forty acres" in the context of UT. When I came here, I was a little surprised that UT kept calling itself "forty acres," because of the closeness that term has to the reparations for slavery, and the ultimate failure to make good on that promise. It just seemed like such an obvious sensitive spot. But I haven't found anything written questioning this nickname that UT has given itself. Do you have any thoughts?

This comment saddens me. Please, can you take an Intro to Race and Ethnic Relations sociology class?

(1) You argue that if anyone truly stands against racism, then they should be fighting all discrimination in the world. Otherwise, they are just being "convenient." I think you as a human being understand that what impassions you the most are the issues that hit closest to home, that have to do with your identity and your self-respect. So it is easier as a human to be more motivated to fight for change when it is your life that is affected. I also hope you are not one of those people who think racism doesn't exist anymore. But if you admit racism exists, and you are against it, by your logic, because you are not fighting for every wronged group, you aren't actually against racism.

(2) The parties initially had a "border crossing" game, where there was a Texas side and a Mexico side. Making a drunken party game out of a serious issue that have caused thousands of needless deaths is, I have to say, offensive.

(3) I take "racist" to mean, in casual language, disrespecting a group in which the members are identified based on the commonality of their physical appearances and, more importantly, their differences from the dominant group. I think you know who people are talking about when they say Latin American and Mexican. We aren't talking about people from Spain who look White. Also, by the way, race is a social construct, so I don't think you need to be so adamant about what actually constitutes race. It is not biology, believe it or not.

(4) Ok, your argument about the one or two Hispanic people in sororities is just like saying, "I can't be racist. I have a Black friend." Just because you happen to be friendly with a few people of a certain group does not mean you do not hold derogatory views of that group. You say, "So-and-so isn't like *other* Hispanics." You see them as individuals, different from the herd. They don't count in your view of the "others" who are easygoing drunkards with funny mustaches, or whatever things you can't admit that you think, but come out in your mocking.

It is offensive b/c of the history and ongoing racism; how Latinos are clearly seen by many Anglo-Americans as "aliens" "invading" "our country." And these aliens aren't like us, they wear ponchos, sombreros, and have mustaches. Aren't they strange? What a fun idea for a party! It is much like wearing blackface, or making your eyes slanty with your fingers.

To answer your question about togas, that is negligibly offensive, because Anglo-Americans actually revere Ancient Rome; they think that is where all "Western light" comes from. Again, you cannot look at your acts as singular moments in time. They are connected to history. The Ancient Romans were never discriminated against by Americans.

As for St. Patrick's Day, I am not sure. I do not know the history behind St. Patrick's Day, but if it is a serious, tragic event, then yes, it is kind of offensive to have drunken revelers "celebrate" it in ignorance.
